SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard is planning an environmental assessment to determine whether oil is leaking from a British tanker sunk by a German U-boat off Long Island during World War II.

The assessment of the tanker Coimbra was planned for last year but was delayed twice. The Coast Guard says the operation will take place from Sunday through May 30.

The wreck of the Coimbra is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) off Long Island's south shore and about 180 feet (54 meters) deep.

The tanker was torpedoed in January 1942, killing 36 of the 46 crew members on board.

Capt. Kevin Reed says the Coast Guard will work with contractor Resolve Marine Group to determine whether oil is leaking from the wreck and to remove any leaking oil if possible.
