SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — It's no fish tale -- a 6-foot-long sturgeon was recently pulled from an upstate New York lake.
State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos says the capture of the threatened species was good news for a recovery program that began nearly 25 years ago.
Researchers caught the 139-pound sturgeon in Oneida Lake near Syracuse earlier this summer, along with 10 smaller sturgeon. The fish were measured, weighed and tagged before being released back to the lake.
Seggos says the big fish is a good sign that recovery efforts are working. DEC-funded Cornell University researchers began restocking lake sturgeon in Oneida Lake in 1995 in hopes of reversing losses caused by overfishing and damming of rivers that blocked spawning habitats.
